Sexual Health For Men

What is Sexual Health?

Sexual health pertains to a man’s well-being in being able to partake and enjoy sexual activity. A man’s sexual health is influenced by a variety of factors including interpersonal, physical, psychological and social.

Although sex is a pleasurable activity, it plays a critical role in strengthening a connection between two people.

Sex is a vital part of a man’s life. Sex drive and sexual expression has a life-long effect and has a dominating effect on a man’s life. Most men have thousands of thoughts about sex every day, beginning prior to puberty and continuing through the end of life.

What is Erectile Disfunction?

Erectile dysfunction also referred to as “ED,” is a condition that affects men, making sexual intercourse difficult as a result of being incapable to achieve and sustain the necessary erection.

Although occasional difficulties getting and maintaining an erection do not indicate a serious problem, persistent erectile dysfunction is and can be a source of stress as a result of diminishing self-confidence and relationship difficulties.

Moreover, erectile dysfunction may be the root cause of a serious health concern that requires treatment as well as a potential indicator of heart disease.
Not getting the proper treatment for erectile dysfunction will not only continue to hinder sexual intercourse but will become more severe with advancing age. According to current statistics, only 1 in 5 men with erectile issues seek help, mainly due to embarrassment.

Men with a concern regarding erectile dysfunction should talk with their doctor.

In many cases, treatment of the fundamental problem is sufficient to reverse the condition. Alternatively, medications available today are highly effective and may offer additional treatment options.

Persistent symptoms associated with erectile dysfunction include:

  • Difficulty in achieving an erection.
  • Difficulty in maintaining an erection.
  • Diminished sexual desire.

What Are Some of the Causes of Erectile Dysfunction?

Sexual arousal in men is a complicated process, which engages blood vessels, the brain, emotions, hormones, and muscles of the body. Erectile dysfunction can occur when the health of these tissues is compromised.

Additionally, lifestyle, stress and mental health can often cause and/or exacerbate erectile dysfunction. In many cases, both physical health conditions and psychological problems can trigger erectile dysfunction.

Physical medical conditions which can cause erectile dysfunction include:

  • Heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and atherosclerosis (clogged blood vessels).
  • Diabetes, obesity, and sudden weight gain.
  • Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Peyronie’s disease (a condition that causes scar tissue inside the penis).
  • Abuse of alcohol and other substances.
  • Prescription drugs, particularly those for treatment of depression/anxiety, blood pressure, antihistamines, and pain.
  • The use of tobacco products and other nicotine delivery products.
  • Sleep problems such as insomnia.
  • Prostate cancer or enlarged prostate treatment and/or therapies.

There are a number of required physical actions which are activated by the brain in order to achieve an erection.

Starting with the state of mind that brings about sexual excitement. The mental state that is required for sexual arousal can be disrupted by a number of psychological factors, and as a result, will exacerbate erectile dysfunction.

Some of these psychological/mental factors include:

  • Anxiety, depression, mental health issues and stress.
  • Problems with a significant other such as lack of communication, performance anxiety, stress, and understanding.
  • Age of afflicted and age of the partner.

Psychological problems that can result from erectile dysfunction may include:

  • An unsatisfied sex life.
  • Increased anxiety and/or stress.
  • Bad body image, embarrassment, low self-esteem, and shame.
  • Relationship stress due to feelings of not being able to satisfy the partner and/or lack of ability to get a partner pregnant.

Prevention of erectile dysfunction begins with living a healthy lifestyle and treating current health concerns which may include:

  • Managing diabetes, heart disease as well as any other health concerns with your physician.
  • Consistent checkups and routine medical screenings with your primary care physician.
  • Cessation of smoking, limiting intake of alcohol.
  • Regular exercise.
  • Reducing and/or managing stress, anxiety, depression as well as other mental health concerns.

Common Questions Regarding Men's Sexual Health

Are there treatment options for erectile dysfunction?

Fortunately, today there are multiple treatment options available for men suffering from erectile dysfunction.
Medication that is prescribed by physicians for erectile dysfunction include:

  • Viagra (Sildenafil)
  • Cialis or Adcirca (Tadalafil)
  • Levitra or Staxyn (Vardenafil)
  • Stendra (Avanafil)
Is erectile dysfunction an indicator of heart disease?

The failure to attain and maintain an erection during sex may be caused by a medical condition known as erectile dysfunction, which may also be an indication of present and future heart issues. Conversely, those who have been diagnosed with heart disease may be able to alleviate symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

Is there a connection between diabetes and erectile dysfunction?

Men who have diabetes, particularly individuals with type 2 diabetes usually suffer from erectile dysfunction. This occurs as a result of damage to the blood vessels and nerves due to long-term improper control of blood sugar.

Is there a link between erectile dysfunction and heart issues?

Previously it was thought that atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the arteries), was the cause of erectile dysfunction as it generally comes before heart issues. The thinking at the time, was that the buildup of plaque decreases blood flow to the penis, therefore making it difficult to achieve and/or maintain an erection.

Today, however, medical specialists have a different view of the relationship between heart problems and erectile dysfunction. This view is that heart issues that occur subsequent to erectile dysfunction is mainly due to the failure of the endothelium (the inner lining of the blood vessels) and smooth muscle tissue. Endothelial failure causes insufficient blood supply levels to the heart, impairs blood flow to the penis, and is the precursor to atherosclerosis.

Although erectile dysfunction is not the prominent indicator of future heart health issues, current research recommends for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction and show no symptoms of heart problems must be screened for heart disease before beginning any treatment. Additionally, testosterone levels should be checked, as men with lower levels of testosterone generally have a higher incidence of erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease.

Jennie Knopf

Patient Coordinator

Jennie has spent most of her life in the Cincinnati, OH area. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northern Kentucky University with her Bachelors of Science in Finance. She helped her husband build and run their own business for the last 5 years and previously worked with Fifth Third Bank before wanting to find something of her own again.

Jennie’s love for fitness and lifting began in high school when she did track and field. After high school she became a personal trainer at a local gym and loved helping people achieve their own personal goals. When she finished her first competition she began dealing with health issues and autoimmune diseases. This began her almost 10 year journey into functional medicine and finding the root cause of issues. Jennie was actually a patient of AVH before joining the team as a Patient Care Coordinator.

When not helping patients at AVH Jennie is a wife and mother to 3 boys. She homeschools all her children and they play multiple sports, so her life is always on the go. When not at some field they enjoy hiking with their German Shepherd, spending time with family and going to church.

Jennie is thankful to be working with a company who puts patients first, but also values their employees and appreciates all the different ideas everyone has to offer. It is truly a blessing to be a patient and an employee.

mariah-doll

Mariah Doll

Patient Coordinator

Mariah went to Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois to graduate with her degree in Respiratory Therapy in 2019. She has worked as a respiratory therapist on night shift since 2018, working for Mercy Health in Rockford, Illinois for her whole career thus far. During her career she worked all over the hospital in all departments including the emergency room, pediatrics, Adult Critical Care, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As of 2022 she also became part of the Neonatal Transport Team.

While she loves her job as a respiratory therapist, she decided that even though she loves helping people, and being part of the team to heal patients; the hospital atmosphere is not where she wants to be every day. Becoming part of the Advanced Vitality team is something she is very passionate about because she is able to still help people achieve their personal health goals, all while having a more personable business to work for rather than a large hospital.
Mariah currently lives in Rockton, Illinois on a farm with her husband and two children.

She tries to spend a lot of time outside caring for the animals, riding their horses, and just exploring their land with her kids. Most days are spent at home, or doing something new outside somewhere when the weather is nice. That is why she feels Advanced Vitality was a great fit for her because it allows her more time with her family and allows for a more normal schedule all while doing what she loves- helping others.

Prior to founding Advanced Vitality HRT Troy spent over 15 years working in the Multifamily industry; beginning his career with a predictive modeling start-up developing scoring models that enabled apartment operators to make more accurate leasing decisions. In 2007, Troy co-founded one of the largest and most successful Renters Insurance companies in the industry. It was Nationally recognized as one of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the country. Troy oversaw all aspects of operations from 2007 to 2020 through aggressive periods of growth into a National footprint, multiple recapitalizations, and several strategic acquisitions.

Since 2015, Troy has successfully completed multiple investments in tech start-ups operating within the multifamily housing space, purchased or invested in over 600k square feet of commercial office/industrial space, and has passively invested in over 2,500 apartment units across the Southeast and Texas markets before taking a more active role in acquiring and repositioning multifamily properties with his company SW Capital.

Troy has also been entrenched in the fitness and nutrition community over the last 20 years. Previously owning a large fitness center for 10 years, being a competitive bodybuilder, as well as coaching fitness, figure, and bodybuilding competitors Troy has acquired a wealth of knowledge in the space. Jason Theobald

Jason Theobald

Co-Founder

Jason M. Theobald graduated law school in 2004, he worked as general counsel to a company local to Cincinnati for 15 years. During this time Jason honed his knowledge of business and creating businesses. In 2017 Jason left his legal job and devoted his full time to his Nutrition Consulting Company called ScoobyHealth. He has grown it to a 7 figure business with 13 coaches.

Jason’s next venture was launching NuEthix Formulations a supplement company found on principles of honesty and integrity. He recognized what the industry was missing, the idea that what is on the label is in the bottle, and thus NuEthix was born.

Jason has 25 years experience working with athletes and weekend warriors who want to OPTIMIZE their bodies. Jason has read thousands of labs and consulted with many regarding their hormonal health. Jason has a Nutrition Consultant license from the AFPA and has studied under Dr. Charles Sefcik a functional medicine practitioner. Due to Jason’s vast experience working with those who have hormonal deficiencies, opening a TRT clinic was a natural progression for him. Jason has been quoted saying, “When you see thousands of labs of those on HRT, you start to notice patterns, and see where mistakes are being made in the administration of these meds. I wanted to bring my experience to the table so people can experience the true benefits HRT has to offer both men and women.” Jason is also 47 years old and uses HRT therapies in his daily life.

Over 10 years experience in medicine, started my career in Women’s Health, Neonatal ICU & as a Lactation counselor. Transitioned to Aesthetics & Concierge infusions, then Functional Medicine/BHRT

Why you chose functional medicine:
I found functional medicine through my own health journey. When traditional medicine had no answers for my chronic pain, dysautonomia, and gut issues, I found a functional medicine provider who spent the time to get to the root cause and help me completely change my life. This journey inspired me to learn as much as I could about this approach to medicine & pursue a career that more closely aligns with my values.

Favorite part of the job:
Connecting my patients with their inner wisdom and ability to heal themselves.

Personal wellness routine:
AM Routine: Meditation/Breathwork, Morning sunlight, Qi Gong, Lymphatic self massage & Skincare
PM Routine: Sauna, Red Light therapy, breathwork, facial cupping/gua sha, skincare
Peptides I swear by: Glutathione, NAD+, GHK-Cu & Selank

Your philosophy in one line:
Prioritize joy & bliss, and the universe will open doors that align

Outside the office:
I love hiking, hot pilates, aerial yoga, dancing, paddleboarding/anything on the water, and traveling the world.

Memorable patient wins:
I had a patient who had been dismissed by multiple physicians who was experiencing extreme histamine response to menopausal shifts (pain, skin changes, major sleep and mood disturbances) and was in a deep depressive state as a result of CPTSD. Through a multifactorial approach including nervous system regulation, lifestyle support, supplements, and slowly titrated BHRT, we were able to eliminate her pain, get her sleeping regularly & stabilize her mood. Soon after, other areas of her life began to open doors, and she was able to shift her career to something more aligned with her new state of being.

Brooke Berg

Patient Coordinator

Background:
I began my career as a respiratory therapist, working for 5 years in ICU, NICU, and Emergency Care. In 2023, I joined Advanced Vitality as Patient Coordinator, where I’ve been able to combine my clinical background with my passion for health and wellness to support patients nationwide.

Loraine Dragwo

Nurse Practitioner

Education and Background:
Chamberlain University – MSN for Family Nurse Practitioner

Why you chose functional medicine:
I found functional medicine through my own health concerns of GI symptoms, adrenal fatigue and early menopause. It took me years for a provider to really listen to me and figure out what was going on. It was that moment that I knew I wanted to get into functional medicine and hopefully prevent another patient from going through the frustration that I went through.

Favorite part of the job:
Picking just one is tough! I enjoy getting to know my patients and hearing their stories; figuring out the pieces to the puzzle to help patients optimize their health so that they have the energy to do the things they enjoy; and that I’m constantly learning.

Monica Skonieczny

Monica Skonieczny

APRN, Nurse Practitioner

Education and Background:
Endocrinology specialty certificate from Duke University
MSN Family Nurse Practitioner from University of Alabama at Birmingham
BSN University of Miami
BA Anthropology Northern Illinois University

Why you chose functional medicine:
I chose to work in functional medicine because it allows me to identify and address the root causes of illness rather than just treating symptoms. This approach lets me combine evidence-based medicine with personalized care to help patients achieve lasting health and vitality.

Favorite part of the job:
My favorite part of working at AV is empowering my patients to improve their lives and helping them to reach their goals.

Personal wellness routine:
My personal wellness routine depends on what my current goals are at the time- right now while pregnant I focus on keeping my lifestyle as intentionally focused on health as possible with weight training, daily steps, and a Lily Nichols’ inspired diet. When not pregnant, I add in testosterone replacement and peptides to support my goals of improving body composition and focusing on longevity/anti-aging!

Philosophy in one line:
“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan

Outside the office, enjoys:
Outside of the office, you can find me working out at the gym, baking sourdough, or spending time with my husband and daughter.

Memorable patient wins:
Some of my most memorable patient wins include supporting women on their journey to conceive and helping women regain healthy menstrual cycles after years of imbalance. I’ve also had the privilege of helping postmenopausal women feel like themselves again through thoughtful hormone optimization, and guiding patients toward sustainable weight loss and lasting lifestyle changes. One particularly rewarding case involved identifying a pituitary adenoma that had gone undiagnosed by endocrinology for years—finally giving her answers after a long journey of feeling unheard.

Jeanie Taggart

APRN, Nurse Practitioner

Education and Background:
I am Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, graduated from the University of Cincinnati. My background and training is in functional endocrinology.

Why you chose functional medicine:
I was a nurse for 8 years, worked as a travel nurse for 3 and traveled all over the country caring for patients and the #1 questions I was always wanting to figure out is why is our health care model reactive and not proactive? When I completed my Masters degree my mission has always been to help individuals reverse and prevent disease. Functional medicine allows me to do exactly that.

Favorite part of the job:
Changing the quality of someone’s life and helping them walk through the hardest seasons of their life with a plan to come out better than they started

Personal wellness routine:
My mornings start best with prayer/quiet time and lots of sunshine when the midwest weather allows for it. I am a former athlete that now has a passion for strength training and a little Lagree.

Your philosophy in one line:
“If God didn’t make it, don’t eat it”

Outside the office:
My family is the most important thing to me. I love to be studying/reading, cooking, boating or traveling. My niece and nephew are my favorite humans on the planet so more than likely you can find me running around with one of them when I have free time.

Memorable patient wins:
Honestly, I simply love what I do… theres so many patient wins. But the most rewarding thing to hear is a patient report that they feel “heard” for the first time in their health journey.
